"I would like to explore the knowledges to arrange the stories, starting from my own self, slowly step out, then coming back home for me to re-arrange and present them again. This may seem as between fiction and reality, but is there not any border in between? Both of them shaped my space underneath the table". (Endang Lestari)

"Tales From Under The Table"

Most of my works explore the historical aspects and memories. Both form consciousness. The two portions need to be balanced. Having pressures on one would make the other lost. History sometimes become the way of how alter-ego gives name, meaning and biography, while memory without history would just appear as an arrow released by its bow. The only thing left is sign. Signs as accumulation or as signs of unnamed things that I don’t even aware of. To have it tested, I would like to begin by my memories of the space underneath the table.

This artwork tells a story of my childhood, re-inviting the nearly lost memories, forgotten and faded, though some clearly kept in mind. Those are what I wanted to give, to catch, to read them all over again, to immortalize them and have them recorded in my work.

However, the basic idea of my will to exhibit at S-14 is actually Layka (the daughter of Herra and Ucok). She reminds me of how I was at her age, when simplest things appear as marvellous things if we take them into present. That hobby of mine playing under the table is something I saw in Layka too as I visited her once in the house of Herra and Ucok’s family. I found my own world underneath the table, collecting all the toys I had, scratched the edge parts of table and stuck my drawing-papers on the upper side of the space underneath the table.
